Does your library struggle to attract students? Traditional libraries do not attract today’s digital learners. Three years ago, the library in our middle school was known as the quiet place where you go when you need a book for a research project. Students didn’t even know how to find the book they were looking for, and internet searches were discouraged. Now, on a typical day, students are packed into the media center before and after school to socialize, use their personal devices, meet with clubs, or just to study. We have rearranged furniture, purchased devices like Chromebooks and iPads, developed new courses for students, created an after school haven, and even changed the typical “library rules.” As an instructional technologist, English teacher, and manager of the new media center, I will share with you the steps it took to get here, and the plans we have for the future.
